Spinalonga is a small island at the gulf of Elounda. Originally it was part of the island of Crete but it was carved out of the coast during the Venetian occupation for defense purposes. The island was fortified in order to protect the entrance of the port. Later the island has been used as a refuge for Christians fearing persecutions from Ottomans and also at the end of the Ottoman occupation Ottoman families found shelter here, fearing Christian reprisals. In 1903 the last Turks left Spinalonga.
From 1903 to 1957 the island was used as a leper colony where patients received medical attention, food and accommodation. It was one of the last active leper colony in Europe.
Elounda used to be a fishing village where its inhabitants lived from fishing, farming and salt extraction. Now it has developed to a famous touristic resort with the most 5-star hotels in Greece located here. You can stroll around the village and its harbor or enjoy a swim at Plaka just a few minutes from Elounda.
