The monasteries of Akrotiri peninsula were established during the Venetian period (1212 – 1645). Their history is associated with the history of the island. Gouverneto Monastery is the first monastery we will visit which is the oldest monastery in Akrotiri, built in 1537. From Gouverneto monastery a paved footpath leads north into the Avlaki gorge. 20 minutes’ walk from the monastery we will meet the Bear cave (Arkoudiotissa). Further along the path, after descending 140 steps, is the Katholikon, an abandoned monastery. It is believed to date from the 5th century.

The last monastery we will visit is the Monastery of Aghia Triada that was built at the beginning of 17th century by two monks. Ever since the monks have been respectfully looking after the monastery and the vineyards and olive trees. At the end of this tour you may enjoy your swim at Marathi beach, a beach mostly preferred by the locals. The clear waters are usually protected by the winds and you can choose between the two small bays.
